Agricultural Institute Club

                          Club History

The Agricultural Institute Club has a rich history going back to 1961 when Charlie Easton was elected the first club president.  The Agricultural Institute started the year before, so the club has been around since almost day one.  Charlie’s admission application was the first one received, and hence he is known as the first Agricultural Institute student.  Charlie also has the distinction of being the first Agricultural Institute graduate, because he was the first student to walk across the stage in 1962 to receive his diploma.  Graduates are called in alphabetical order at graduation and there was not a graduate in 1962 whose last name started with a letter before “E” in the alphabet.  We wished that we had a picture of Charlie walking across the stage, surely with a big smile on his face, probably unaware though that he was writing the first page of our history.

The club requests your assistance in helping us collect and preserve our history.  We will compile, preserve, and present our history on this site for others to study and enjoy.  We started this project in fall 2008, so we have a long way to go to trace our roots, almost 50 years worth of history.  We are so dedicated though to this project that our president will appoint two club members every year to serve as our club historians, who will work with our advisers to record our past.  Current club members like learning about our history, and we think that former members will like reminiscing about their good ole days in the Agricultural Institute.

What type of information do we need?  We would like any information that you have pertaining to the club.  Pictures would be wonderful, since they can speak volumes.  Old club schedules, yearbooks, programs, budgets, and any other printed documents related to the club are part of our history.  Stories about your experiences in the club can be as good as or even better than pictures.

For example, there is a legend in the Agricultural Institute that the recipe for the club’s famous barbecue sauce is kept in a safe in our director’s office.  Is that fact or myth?  There is also a funny story about a new club adviser who transported two live hogs donated for a pig pickin in the back of his Ford Ranger.  As the story goes, one of the hogs jumped out around the Newton Grove exit on I-40 west.  The adviser chased the hog for about 30 minutes, but the hog got away when the adviser bogged down to his knees in mud.  When he got back to his truck, the adviser found that the other hog was gone too.

Please send history documents to us by emailing our adviser.  If you cannot email items, please send copies by postal, but do not send original documents, because we do not want to take a chance of losing them.  Thank you!
