Farm Animal Days
This year Farm Animal Days was sponsored by N.C. State University's
Departments of Animal Science, Poultry Science, and Food Science, the
Agricultural Research Service, NC Farm Bureau Federation, and NCSU's Animal and Poultry Science Clubs. More than 7,820 students, teachers, parents, and children visited the new Beef Educational Unit on Lake Wheeler Road to spend a day with farm animals. We distributed around 2,000 educational handouts to the adults and 1,822 coloring books to the kids. During the three days, 6,024 cups of ice cream were eaten! This was the third year that the event was held after a two year hiatus due to the outbreak of foot and mouth disease. Horses, rabbits, cows, goats, pigs, chickens and other farm animals were housed at the educational unit for three days, April 5-7. Under the direction of Dr. Jeanette Moore, students in the Animal and Poultry Science Clubs, along with faculty and other volunteers, helped to educate elementary age children about animal agriculture. For many of these children, this was the first time they have seen some of the farm animals and much to their excitement, they even got to hold and touch most of the animals.

Ag Awareness Week
The Animal Science Club is always a sponsor of Alpha Zeta's Ag Awareness
Week. For three days, agriculture organizations set up booths on the
Brickyard and help educate the students of NCSU about agriculture. Club members arrange live animal displays, educational pamphlets are distributed and an organizational booth is prominently located.

Other Activities
Scholarship Endowment
Since 2004 members of the NCSU Animal Science Club have worked diligently to set aside $20,000 for the establishment of an endowment to support future students with interests in livestock and the livestock industry. Although this endowment was not a stated goal until about a year ago, student efforts to expose the general public to livestock and livestock products at the NC State Fair eventually made the endowment possible. The ANS Club has given three to five $500 scholarships to deserving members for many years but now has a vehicle for providing those scholarships indefinitely.
Socials
Held annually at the end of the fall semester, the Fall Social offers Club members a chance to unwind from their studies. This past fall our social was held at Lonestar, active club members enjoyed dinner and a light hearted time with other members.
Similar to the Fall Social, the Spring Social concludes the Club's activities for the semester. This year's event was held at the Longbranch Saloon in Raleigh and attendees enjoyed dinner followed by an evening of dancing. At the Longbranch everyone enjoyed dancing, riding the bull and singing their favorite karaoke songs.
Student Faculty Mixer
The Animal Science departmental mixer is an annual event sponsored by the
NCSU Animal Science Club and offers an opportunity for incoming freshman
to meet and visit with many of the faculty in the department. It also
offers a chance for returning students to meet and socialize with new
freshmen, as well as other returning students. Get-to-know you games,
designed to spur interaction between individuals, are enjoyed by all
attending and dramatically increase the level of interaction between
students and faculty.
CALS Club Fair
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences offers a Club Fair for new freshmen each year in order to expose incoming students to student organizations in the college. Four of our members, along with two advisors, helped man the booth this year to recruit new students into our club. We utilize a display board with photographs of members involved in club activities
from previous events.
Quadrathalon
The Quadrathalon offers current undergraduate students an opportunity to compete locally in a test of knowledge and skills associated with all facets of the livestock industry. Each team is comprised of four members who are tested on the following industries: beef, dairy, swine, horse, small ruminant, meat science and poultry. The winning team at each college or university has the opportunity to compete in ASAS regional events.
