In the thirty-sixth year of the Pi Kappa Alpha
Fraternity, the Alpha Epsilon Chapter at North Carolina State University was
born. On October 31,1904, the Supreme Council of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity
incorporated the Alpha Epsilon Chapter, thereby, initiating a great tradition of
excellence now entering its ninety-sixth year.
On the night of November 4, 1904, the founding
six brothers were initiated. The following six members laid the foundation for
the many years of successes that have encompassed the Alpha Epsilon Chapter.
John A. Park, Raleigh NC
Ronald B. Wilson, Greensboro NC
J. Gabriel Hardison, Thurman NC
Durant W. Robertson, Washington DC
J. Graham Morrison, Manipisa, NC
William A. Buys, Havelock, NC
One of the longest traditions of this chapter
is the annual Pi ball. The event began in 1906, as a celebration of the AE
chapter, and soon became the biggest social event on the North Carolina State
campus. In the 1930's, Pika Ball, the original name, drew people from many
states, and the numbers in attendance reached nearly 3000 people. The 1933
Chapter History states, "we feel confident that our prestige as the best
hosts at State College will prevail." Not only did the prestige prevail,
but the social climate at AE has flourished through the years. Currently, we are
preparing for our ninety-forth annual Pi Ball which has become a weekend formal
party away from campus.
On the athletic field, Alpha Epsilon has
always been characterized as fierce competitors. The high caliber of athletes
began in the early years when many of the brothers played varsity sports. The
list includes varsity letterman, varsity team captains, and numerous brothers
who played three varsity sports. As the college athletics grew, coaches no
longer favored varsity letterman to pledge fraternities, but, this did not cause
AE to lose its athletic edge. The Presidents Cup, the overall intramural
championship award, has felt at home in the Pika trophy case throughout its
existence. The AE chapter won the cup several times in the early years and
dominated the eighties winning the cup 6 times, with four consecutive
championships. The cup has returned to the Pika trophy case once again as a
reminder of AE's dedication to athletics during the 1996-1997 season.
In 1964, the AE chapter moved from its
original house on
1720 Hillsborough Street to its current location at 214 S. Fraternity court. The
Chapter house has 38 men living in it, serves meals 5 days a week, and is the
site of the chapter meetings and social functions. Of special significance to
the house, is the brick bar. The bar is made up of bricks from a farm outside
Ferndell and were used in the construction of the original chapter house. During
the transportation of the bricks between houses, two brothers, David Maxwell
Ford and D. Brant Weinstein, lost their lives. They are commemorated by plaques
in the Bar Room. Four other brothers have died while being active members. Greg
Moore died in a traffic accident in the Summer of 1987 and Donald Brandt
Weinhold died in a plane crash in December of 1991. Both brothers eternal are
remembered by trees planted in the front yard. Brian Cardini, Spring 94, was
tragically killed in a car wreck during the Summer of 1996. The Brotherhood
created a memorial volleyball court for Brian as this was his favorite sport. We
have started an Annual Tournament in his memory as well as a scholarship. Dustin
Ryan Green, Spring 02, was also killed in a car wreck during the Spring of 2002.
We now host our annual Founders Day golf tournament in his name. In 1986,
Hatteras Hammocks donated the Pika Hammock which at the time was the world's
largest hammock. Currently, we have the world's largest hammock that was
built by one of our brother's Brian Maclaga.
This brief history of our chapter is to give
you, a guest of our Chapter, an understanding of the traditions that tightly
bind this chapter, making us the strongest Greek chapter on the campus of North
Carolina State University.
