Hello all--

I hope you had a great winter break, and the semester has started off
nicely for you. We will not be having a formal (as if you could call
our meetings formal) meeting this month, however we will be going out
for beer at Flying Saucer on Wednesday the 16th at 6PM if anyone is
interested.

Ideas to be discussed over beer if you are old enough to consume:

1. Camping Martin Luther King Jr. weekend? Some fellow members have
tossed the idea around, so if you are interested, come out Wednesday.

2. Canes game this month on college night. Pat tells me that if we
get a group of 10 or more, we get a discount. If you would like more
information, come out Wednesday or send him an email at pwmonigl@ncsu.edu
.

Next meeting will be February 6th at 5:30PM.

I STILL HAVE GEOLOGY CLUB SHIRTS FOR SALE. They are $15, you can pick
one up in my lab (4137).

Have a great rest of the week!

Hello, again.

A note from Rick Kolb, who will be speaking to us tomorrow night:

UNC had about 30 students attend the presentation we made to them. I
fully expect NCSU to top that!

A bit of encouragement for you, considering we are playing UNC on
Saturday.

Hello All--

Just a little reminder that we will be having a club meeting on
Wednesday, November 7th at 5:30PM in Jordan 1132. This is one of the
more important meetings of the year, so come participate!

On the agenda:

1. We have invited a few guest speakers from MACTEC and NAVOCEANO to
come and talk about their companies and job opportunities for
students of all degree types. Two flyers for both MACTEC and
NAVOCEANO are attached.

2. Shirts are finally designed, we'll be taking sizes and showing
off (maybe?) one shirt.

3. Our camping trip is scheduled for November 16-18th at Key Haven.
We'll discuss more precise detail at the meeting.

As a reminder: The PAMS career fair is Wednesday from 9-2 in Dabney
Hall. NAVOCEANO will be there accepting resumes, along with multiple
other companies. If you are graduating, I would encourage you to go!

We will have pizza at the meeting, so at least come eat!

A few updates on what is going on within the geology club:

1. I just finished putting together the geology club shirts, and I
plan on having estimated costs and design at the next meeting.

2. Our next meeting is November 7th, 5:30, Jordan 1132. We will be
having some environmental consulting representatives talk about what
is going on at their companies and give information about jobs.
I am currently trying to get James Rigney (from NAVOCEANO) to come
as well, so we will have a lot of opportunities for you to check out.

3. Our camping trip is November 16th-18th at Key Haven. The website
is www.ncsu.edu/keyhaven , if you want to check it out.
It is also listed on the front page of the geology club website.

4. I will be leading an extra credit field trip for my 110 students
on November 16th at 3PM to the schist outcrop on 98 if anyone is
interested in tagging along.

5. If you have gone on field camp in the past, and have pictures,
please bring them to me at the meeting! We are going to try and
update the field camp photos from this past one in Newfoundland
and all other previous trips. I'll have my computer, so I can
upload them at the meeting.

If you have questions/comments/spare change send me an email! Just
make sure that "geoclub@lists.ncsu.edu" is not in the "reply-to" area!

Hello All--

I hope this finds you well and not too stressed about school. I just
wanted to send out a reminder that our Geology Club meeting will be
Wednesday, October 3rd at 5:30PM in Jordan 1132 (the conference
room). We will be having chips, drinks, and probably halloween candy
while "setting in stone" dates and places for the camping trip. We
will also be taking a vote on the new geology club t-shirt, and after
that is finished, getting sizes to order those shirts. Also on the
agenda will be how we can help out with the PAMS open house October
20th, what is going on at Fred Olds Magnet School, and when we can go
to a Carolina Hurricanes game.

Come ready to provide input! We'll see you Wednesday!

NCSU Geology Club

PS--please make sure when replying to an email it does not get sent
back to the entire geology club listserv!

Hello All--

Update on the camping trip initially scheduled for the weekend of
October 20th:

1. The PAMS open house is that weekend, and we really need to be
there to support geology (and other MEAS departments, but geology
first, of course!). Obviously this throws a bit of a wrench into our
camping plans. Patrick and I have talked about other weekends we
could go--and we need your opinion on when would work best for you.
We'll choose the one that works the best for the most amount of
people, and go from there.

        Our options are:
                October 26-29
                November 2-4
                November 9-10
                November 16-18

2. Unfortunately the only camping sites in the area we are looking
at going are state parks, which means no alcohol. We'll talk more
about this later.

3. I'll send out more information as it becomes available regarding
camping and the open house. Remember, if you are interested in
helping teach at Fred Olds, email me!

Have a great Friday! Let me know when you can go camping!

Hi everyone,

I want to congratulate the new Geology Club officers for 2007-08, as
elected last Thursday. They are:

President - Julia Howell
Vice President - Patrick Monigle
Treasurer - Ryan Unsworth
Secretary - Jennie Reitmann
PAMS Reps - Kristen Hall and John Maas

Best wishes in the coming year! Also, good luck to those who have finals
to take (and finals to grade...). Have a great summer!

Best Regards,
Matt King

Hi Everyone,

We will be having our last geology club meeting of the year this Thursday
4/26 at 5:30 pm in Jordan ll09. Please be sure to attend, as we will be
having elections for 2007-2008 officers! We will also be providing snacks
and a summary of this year's activities.

See you all on Thursday!

Matt King

Hello everyone,

I hope all of you are having a stupendous spring semester! I am writing
to inform you all of a couple things.

1) Geology club meeting next Monday (3/19) at 6pm in Jordan 1108. We will
be discussing activities for this semester--including a weekend camping
trip--and we will also be watching MAGMA: VOLCANIC DISASTER (Rated PG-13
for disaster violence and peril!!!). We should have a few good laughs at
another misguided Hollywood disaster movie.

2) The gem and mineral club's annual show is coming up soon and we still
need volunteers to help cut geodes and some other things. It's a lot of
fun, it's great to put on your resume, and they also like to help us out
by giving scholarships to geology students. Please let us know if you are
interested.

That's it for now. Have a good week and I will see you all next Monday!

Matt King
Geo Club VP

(Fall, 2006)

Hi everyone,

Sorry for the extreme late notice, but we will have a Geology Club meeting
THIS TUESDAY NIGHT at 5pm. Dr. David Genereux, the department's
hydrogeology professor, will be giving a talk on his current research
which involves "interaction of groundwater and surface water,
hydrogeology, watershed hydrology and groundwater flow, chemical/isotope
hydrology, and biogeochemical cycling." This should be a very interesting
talk so please attend if you can!

Also, we will go over the options for field trips this year and actually
put some dates on our plans. So if you want to be involved in where the
Geology Club goes, be there on Tuesay!

That is all for now, hope to see you all a few nights from now!

Hi Geology Club member!

Geo Club Announcements:
1) Due to the initiation of construction beginning this week at Jordan,
the Geology Club has been asked to move the rock specimens that decorate
the landscape. I know this is a daunting task, but I know some of these
rocks have sentimental meanings from field trips. So, if anyone is
willing to help out with this PLEASE let Sarah Reising (sereisin@ncsu.edu)
know ASAP!

2) The last meeting of the semester is going to be a PIZZA party so that we
can all have a pick-me-up during exams. Since we are going to be having
pizza and we do not want to waste any, you must RSVP by Sunday the 4th at
midnight. To RSVP email me at kisinger@ncsu.edu and say yes or no to
coming and if you have any topping preferences. The party will on
Wednesday, Dec. 7th at 5pm!!! In Jordan, room 1132 which is the
conference room.
GOOD LUCK ON EXAMS!

Ginger,

I bet you are busy ... right now....

Kristin and I have decided to through the party on the night of graduation
(5-14). Would you mind passing the message on along with a note asking
for a head count? Those emails can be sent directly to me if you would
like but at the very least please make sure I get copied on messages.
Kristin and I plan on supplying hot dogs, burgers, chips and drinks
(including beer) and if anyone would like, they can bring whatever they
choose. I was able to find the directions we made for last years party on
my comp which are in HTML and word format. Thanks for taking your time to
handle this.

Dear Bob

Yes I am looking forward to speaking to the club at 5pm (I can't stay too
late!) and I will be talking about my research on the origin of birds and
fieldwork in China and Mongolia.

Best,

Julia Clarke

Dr. Clarke,

Will you be speaking at the meeting of the NCSU Geology Club meeting
of Tuesday, March 22, 2005? If so, what will be your topic? I want to
get the information correct for the NCSU Geology Club Web page.

     Thanks.

--Bob Melvin

Geology Club's next meeting is on Tuesday March 22...at 5pm on the second
floor of Jordan. Dr Clarke will be speaking and, as always, there will be
something yummy to eat. Thanks for all the replies about the Gem and
Mineral Show, but it looks like we still need some more volunteers on Fri.
Anyone who is going to field camp this summer is strongly encouraged to
come out.

Thanks,
Helen

Calling all Faculty, Advisors, and Students:

Friday, March 18 from 11-2 will be the first PAMS Spirit Day. There will
be free lunches handed out on the first floor of Dabney and the NEW PAMS
t-shirts will be sold. Shirts are $10. They are black with red and white
print on the front and back.

There is a table available to the GeoClub to set up if we can find people
to be there. This is to let people within our college know what the
GeoClub is all about. So if you can volunteer to talk about the GeoClub,
please let me know. And if you cant, make sure you come by the first
floor of Dabney to get your free lunch on Friday.

Ginger Sigmon
Sr in Chemistry and Geology
President of PAMS Council

Hey again...the Gem and Mineral Show is at the Fairgrounds, in the Scott
Building. Look for the banner on the building, but I believe it is the
building directly to the right of the Blueridge entrance. When you email
back, can you give me a range of time you will try to be there...thanks

Helen

Hey everyone,

The Gem and Mineral Show is coming up (April 1, 2, 3).
As usual, we will be helping out at the geode booth, and are looking for
volunteers. The whole show is a lot of fun. Please let me know when you
can come!!
Friday 1-7pm, Sat 10-5, and Sunday 10-5

Just send me a quick email: hrmunt@ncsu.edu

Thanks and hope you all had a great break,
Helen

Thanks to everyone for coming out to pizza and bowling...it was a great
time, I think we will definitely do that again!

Tuesday at 5pm is our next meeting up in Jordan Hall. Dr Fodor is
breaking out an old film on pillow basalts that you dont want to miss, and
I have an audio tape of someone's experience being caught in the ash cloud
from Mt St Helens 1980 eruption. As always, there will be food and fun!

Peace,
Helen

Hey Bob,

Can you send this to the list serv and post it on the web please.

Hey Everyone!

This Friday night we will be eating pizza and bowling. We will meet at 6pm
at I Love New York Pizza on Hillsborough Street, and then walk down to the
bowling lanes afterward. Come on out!

Take care,
Helen

--------------ALSO---

Helen and I were both having problems sending things to the list. You
have done such a good job getting rid of the spam stuff but for some
reason its not letting us send things to it either. It sent me an email
saying I was not a member of the list and that i should contact an
officer.

I went into the list and saw that Helen and I were on there. So its just
not letting us send things.

Have a good night,

-Ginger

Here's what was discussed at out last geology club meeting on Tuesday,
February 8th.

On February 25th we will be having a geology club fun activity where we'll
go get pizza on Hillsborough St. and then go bowling afterwards. It will
be a lot of fun so everyone come and eat and bowl! Also, if you have any
interest in helping out at Montesouri school let us know. The geology
club t-shirts are in and they're great! If you ordered one, be sure to
pick it up at our next meeting, if you did not order one but would like
one there may be a few extras. The cost is $10.

Dr. Fodor was our guest speaker at the meeting. He spoke about "Igneous
petrology on ice: collecting gabbro in Antarctica." He gave a very
interesting account of his experiences from his trip to Antarctica at the
beginning of the new year. He had lots of very cool photographs of the
geology of Antarctica and gave us and idea of how people stay in
Antarctica while doing research. We thank Dr. Fodor for his interesting
presentation and look forward to having additional guest speakers at our
meetings this spring!

PSS: After the friends and fun at the Lake, we will probably retire to
Sammy's for a few drinks, if anyone is up for it.
