Hello all--

A couple of things:

1) Lisa Meeks at Fred Olds University would like for us to help teach
part of their unit on rocks. Her email is attached.

2) If you are interested in going to a hockey game on March 25th
during college night, send Ryan an email (raunswor@ncsu.edu). More
information can be found here.

3) We are planning on doing Service Raleigh on March 29th. If you are
interested in this service project, send an email back to me (make
sure you remove "geoclub" from the email, that way everyone doesn't
have to read) and we will take care of the details.

Thanks!

David - Greetings. Just a quick note to accompany an attachment
describing the 2008 version of our summer program (the ninth summer).
I would appreciate it if you would bring the program to the attention of
qualified NC State students. We typically get 30-40 applicants for three
to four positions, so it tends to be rather competitive. Note that we
have one position again this year specifically for the best candidate
from an under-represented group (that designation includes women for
this program). Our focus is upper level undergrads and intro grad
students with an interest in field-based research.

Thanks for your help in getting the word out to qualified students -
best wishes.

Hello all--

I hope you had a great winter break, and the semester has started off
nicely for you. We will not be having a formal (as if you could call
our meetings formal) meeting this month, however we will be going out
for beer at Flying Saucer on Wednesday the 16th at 6PM if anyone is
interested.

Ideas to be discussed over beer if you are old enough to consume:

1. Camping Martin Luther King Jr. weekend? Some fellow members have
tossed the idea around, so if you are interested, come out Wednesday.

2. Canes game this month on college night. Pat tells me that if we
get a group of 10 or more, we get a discount. If you would like more
information, come out Wednesday or send him an email at pwmonigl@ncsu.edu .

Next meeting will be February 6th at 5:30PM.

I STILL HAVE GEOLOGY CLUB SHIRTS FOR SALE. They are $15, you can pick
one up in my lab (4137).

Have a great rest of the week!

Hello all--

Just letting you know that the Geology Club shirts are in my lab, 4137 Jordan Hall. Shirts are $15 a piece--don't worry if you didn't "order" one at the meeting, I ordered extras. Those of you who did "order" shirts, I have yours set aside so we can make sure you get the one you wanted. The lab is almost always open, and either Pat (the VP) or myself will be in to get you a shirt.

At the December 5th meeting we will be discussing a fundraiser idea Patrick and I had for the club. Also, Kathryn Doll will be sharing her ideas about a potential "End of Year/Holiday" party we may be having. More will come about the meeting later.

I'll see you all soon!

Dear All,

Please find below an outline of a PhD project available at the University of Leeds, UK. This position needs to be filled by January 2008 and is open to ANY nationality apart from UK citizens/residents.

For further information please contact Sam Shaw (s.shaw@see.leeds.ac.uk) or Liane Benning (l.benning@see.leeds.ac.uk)

Project title: Experimental investigation of calcium carbonate mineralogy in past and future oceans.

Project description: The geochemistry of the earth's oceans has changed considerably through geological time due to significant changes in chemical composition (e.g. Mg/Ca ratio), PCO2 and pH. In addition, climate change caused by increasing atmospheric CO2 could have a significant impact on the geochemistry of the future ocean via acidification. Such changes in ocean chemistry have altered the mineralogy, formation mechanism and precipitation kinetics of marine inorganic and biogenic calcium carbonate minerals. This study will use laboratory-based experimental approaches to quantify the effects of certain geochemical and environmental factors on the composition (chemical and isotopic), phase stability (e.g. calcite, aragonite, magnesite) and morphology (particle size/shape) of marine calcium carbonate minerals. The particular emphasis will be to quantify the key parameter that control marine calcium or magnesium carbonate formation through geological time and in the future ocean. The use of advanced wet chemical synthesis methods will be complemented by high-resolution analytical (e.g. ICP-MS), microscopic techniques (e.g. FEG-SEM/TEM) and diffraction techniques (e.g. XRD) and the goal will be to characterise the atomic scale the carbonate formation mechanisms from marine solutions. The results will allow us to compute the key factors which control biogenic and inorganic carbonate formation in oceanic environments and produce predictive models of how future changes in atmospheric CO2 will affect these processes. Also, the kinetics and thermodynamic models produce will be integrated with data from other groups within the Min-Gro network to formulate improved strategies for carbon sequestration in the ocean or via deep geological injection into the geosphere.

Training: The student will join an interdisciplinary team made up of researchers in Leeds (Dr. Sam Shaw and Dr. Liane G. Benning) and Oxford (Dr. Ros Rickaby) but she/he will also spend ~ 6 months in the laboratory of one of the other Min-Gro partners. Training will be provided in state-of-the-art techniques including high-resolution microscopy, spectroscopy and isotope techniques. This combination of advanced training will provide a broad portfolio of skills required for future employment in the academic, environmental or industrial sectors.

Eligibility: Thee normal eligibility requirements of Marie Curie Fellowships apply. A condition of a Marie Curie Fellowship is that the applicant is not already resident in the host country, but will also spend some time in one or more of the other participating Institutes. The applicant must also satisfy the requirements to register as a doctoral student in Leeds , which generally involves holding an appropriate Diploma or Masters degree and having passed the appropriate language tests. Marie Curie Fellowships have substantial benefits, both in salary and in mobility and family allowances. The duration of the Fellowships are 3 years. Applications are invited from graduates who have, or expect to gain, a good degree in chemistry, geology, environmental science, materials science, or another relevant science discipline. The applicant should have a good command of both written and spoken English.

Julia,

I think the options of Nov 2-4 & 16-18 are best.  The other two coincide
with the Homecoming game and concert (Oct 26 & 27)and the UNC game (Nov
10).  You can put me down for either one I mentioned would fit.

Also, the REI event stuff is only planned out a month and a half in
advance.  Here is a link to the events for the one in North Hills:
http://www.rei.com/stores/events/97  Pretty much all of the events would
be the same for the 3 REI's in the area.

Some notable events that we might be interested in:
http://www.rei.com/stores/store_event_detail.jsp?pid=8AE5ACEE67BA5D295B16CB80F1773687&template_id=30&template_family=webDetail&ignore_cache=1
-Doesn't say anything about rocks exactly, but would be cleaning up a
wetland area and I know a lot of people have a marine science
concentration.  That is on Saturday Oct 6th, the weekend after our next
meeting.

There are a few other volunteer projects, but none that scream out rocks.
You can sort through them and see if any interest you.  They do have cool
trips, but they cost a lot of money and we don't have enough time to plan
how to pay.

Hope this helps!
Ryan

Hello All--

Update on the camping trip initially scheduled for the weekend of
October 20th:

1.  The PAMS open house is that weekend, and we really need to be
there to support geology (and other MEAS departments, but geology
first, of course!).  Obviously this throws a bit of a wrench into our
camping plans.  Patrick and I have talked about other weekends we
could go--and we need your opinion on when would work best for you.
We'll choose the one that works the best for the most amount of
people, and go from there.

        Our options are:
                October 26-29
                November 2-4
                November 9-10
                November 16-18

2.  Unfortunately the only camping sites in the area we are looking
at going are state parks, which means no alcohol. We'll talk more
about this later.

3.  I'll send out more information as it becomes available regarding
camping and the open house.  Remember, if you are interested in
helping teach at Fred Olds, email me!

Have a great Friday!  Let me know when you can go camping!

A couple of jobs for those who are interested, pay is ~$600/day.

Jeff

Just wondering if you can send this around to undergraduate students:

We are looking to hire 1-2 wellsite geologists to drill oil/gas wells mostly in
northern AB (Grande Prairie and Peace River area) and southern SK (Estevan area).
Drilling is typically horizontal oil wells (2 geologists working 12 hour shifts)
however vertical or directional (1 geologist) wells may also be drilled.

Typical responsibilities of a wellsite geologist include:
1) Studying rock cuttings, gas values, FEMWD (formation evaluation measurement while
drilling, for example interpretation of gamma) to determine what formations are
being drilled into and how drilling should proceed (geosteering)
2) Sending detailed reports/logs/updates to the drilling company
3) Evaluating offsetting well data
4) Picking core points based on formation properties and gas shows

This is an excellent opportunity to gain drilling experience for anyone interested
in working internationally or on offshore rigs, especially since wellsite experience
is not necessary. Most drilling companies require a geology degree, H2S
certification, on-site company training and recommend first aid training. A
dependable vehicle (preferably with 4x4) is required and a laptop computer and cell
phone are strongly recommended. Those interested will have to start their own
incorporated AB company (set-up costs are approximately $500). Starting rates are
approximately $300/day plus vehicle allowance ($100 per day or $1/km), subsistence
($60/day), gas detector use ($75/day), computer and cell ($50/day), invert/produced
oil charge ($40/day). Rates may change slightly depending on the drilling company.
Rates also have the potential to increase with proven abilities. Work schedules vary
as they dependent strongly on the time it takes to complete the well however typical
work schedules initially are 5 days on, 5 days off. Work is usually done away from
"home" (depending on where the person lives) so on-site accomodations or hotel
allowances are provided.

If anyone is interested or looking for more information, please contact Carolyn at
ccburridge@hotmail.com or 780-266-3316.
