How can I get involved?
Our chapter of Habitat for Humanity is very active. Because of this, we offer plenty of chances for somebody to get involved in our organization. The most obvious way to get involved is to come out to workdays and help us build a house on Saturday mornings.

But, we offer many more avenues for involvement if swinging a hammer isn't your forte. You can come out on Tuesday or Thursday night and help tutor children. In addtion, our major fundraisers, Shack-A-Thon and the 5K, always need plenty of volunteers to go off without a hitch.

Perhaps one of the most rewarding ways to get involved with NCSU Habitat for Humanity is for you to become an officer. At the end of each spring semester, officer elections are held. There are over a dozen positions open at the end of each year, but come prepared to fight for your spot. If you're interested, more information on officer duties is available.

The best way to stay updated and get involved is to sign up to join our email listserv. If you would like to register a group for a workday, please contact one of the works project officers.
Calendar
Workdays
Nearly every Saturday, including over the summer, we send a crew of student volunteers to the worksite. We work closely with Wake County Habitat for Humanity to ensure that we consistently have a house to work on. They have done a great job of supplying us with essential work.

And once we are at the worksite, you will find that there is always something that needs to get done. The day might start off slowly, but that always picks up. Once you get out on the worksite, time will tend to fly by rather quickly.

Our normal workday begins at 8 AM Saturday morning behind the Student Health Center. We meet here and take a quick role call to ensure everybody has made it. Then we carpool out to our house and begin working. Typically, workdays last until 3 or 4 in the afternoon.

You do not need any prior skill or training in order to come out and volunteer on the worksite. You don't even need tools (they're provided by Wake County Habitat and us). The only thing you need to bring, besides yourself, is a good attitude and a willingness to learn and help others. Oh, I should mention you get a free lunch at every workday too!

If you would like more information about workdays, consult a works project officer. They can provide you with all of the information you will need to know about workdays.
Tutoring
We tutor at the Boy's and Girl's clubs of Raleigh on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6 PM until 8 PM. We meet on campus in front of Bragaw Residence Hall (near the half-circle off of Dan Allen Drive). If you do not have a car, that is fine. We carpool with whoever we have to get out to Boy's and Girl's clubs.

To start tutoring, all you need to do is join the listserv and watch your email inbox every Sunday for the tutoring sign-up emails. When you sign up for tutoring, you are only signing up for that week. You can volunteer as often or as little as you desire, and we are never going to know the difference. Contact our tutoring officer if you have any questions.

We provide all the supplies that you may need when tutoring, so you just have to bring yourself. Almost all of the kids need help in elementary math or English, which shouldn't be much of a problem for anybody here at NC State. We will occassionally get students in high school who need help, but this is not the bulk of our tutees. No prior experience is necessary, just come on out.
Shack-A-Thon
Shack a thon is an annual event organized by NCSU Habitat for Humanity to educate the campus community on the state of poverty housing in this country and abroad. Student organizations build wooden shacks on the brickyard and stay there for a week, panhandling passersby to raise money for Habitat for Humanity in the effort to eliminate poverty housing. All funds raised are donated to Habitat for Humanity to build homes in Wake County and abroad. Last year, over $20,000 in spare change was raised in this effort. Not only is it a great cause, but it’s a lot of fun! Students hanging out on the brickyard 24/7 with nothing else better to do but have a good time. Bring your guitar, bring your cards, bring your sleeping bag.
House Your Neighbor 5k and Fun Run
The event has been growing bigger and better each and every year that we have held it. Previous 5K's have seen over 300 runners and raised well over $5,000. We have received numerous sponsorships and support from local businesses and private citizens.

The fun run is a 1 mile untimed run/walk for people of all ages to show their support for Habitat for Humanity. Great for families and groups.
Break Trips
If you are interested in going on any of the Break Trips we host then the most important thing for you to do is be at each of the all campus meetings on the first Monday of every month. Because the dates, length, and location of our trips changes from semester to semester we find it best to send out specific information via the listserv and in person at the interest meetings. At the first or second meeting of each semester, we will announce our plans for the current semester's Break Trip. This will include dates, location, cost, and subsequent interest meetings. You must attend the announced interest meetings in order to be eligible for the trips. The interest meetings will contain the most up-to-date information regarding our trips. As the trips get closer to happening, then more and more information will be posted on this website, probably the day after it was discussed in the interest meeting.
Becoming an Officer
Being a NCSU Habitat for Humanity Officer is a lot of fun and a great opportunity to increase your involvement with NC State Habitat for Humanity and a wonderful group of people. No prior experience is necessary and we love new people with new ideas! Find out more.
