What is Shack-A-Thon?

Shack a thon is an annual event organized by NCSU Habitat for Humanity to educate the campus community on the state of poverty housing in this country and abroad. Student organizations build wooden shacks on the brickyard and stay there for a week, panhandling passersby to raise money for Habitat for Humanity in the effort to eliminate poverty housing. All funds raised are donated to Habitat for Humanity to build homes in Wake County and abroad. Last year, over $20,000 in spare change was raised in this effort. Not only is it a great cause, but it’s a lot of fun! Students hanging out on the brickyard 24/7 with nothing else better to do but have a good time. Bring your guitar, bring your cards, bring your sleeping bag.

How do we get a shack?

Due to a high level of interest in shack-a-thon, we are unable to accommodate all interested organizations with a shack as campus safety only allows for 16 shacks. Because of this, there is a bidding system to participate in shack a thon with all money raised going toward your group’s grand total raised. The minimum bid starts at $100. All student organizations that raise at least $100 are in the running to get a shack. If more than 11 student organizations raise at least $100, then the shacks will be decided by who raises the most money. So the idea is, work with your group to raise as much as you can to make sure you get a shack. Money raised before shack a thon will be applied to your group’s total at the end of the week. The more you raise before shack a thon, the better chance you have of placing in the top 4 fundraising groups. The top 4 groups will get a free spot (without having to bid) and free wood for next year’s shack a thon. Many groups in the past have chosen to share a shack with another club to make it easier to make a bid. You will have the opportunity to team with other groups at the first interest meeting. If your group raises a bid but does not raise enough money to get a shack, because of legal stuff, it still has to go to Habitat for Humanity, but it will be applied to your shack bid next year.
