• Why are you here? - various responses about helping community to using power tools

• HFHI Info

  • Wake County Habitat for Humanity is an affiliate of HFHI

  • HFHI is the uniting factor of all Habitat organizations

  • HFHI works to eliminate poverty housing all over the world

  • The houses are built using donation money as well as no interest, no profit loans.

  • A strict selection process based on several categories occurs before a person is deemed eligible to receive a habitat home

  • A homeowner must put in sweat equity hours in order to be able to own their home

• NCSU Habitat

  • Subset of Wake County Habitat for Humanity

  • Builds about 3 homes for Wake County each year

  • Last year we raised over $28,000 to fund a new home (it cost about $60,000 to sponsor a new home completely)

  • NCSU habitat was founded in 1991 and Wake County Habitat was founded in 1985

• How to get involved

  • Construction!

    • Every Saturday you can help work on building the house

    • Also there is a deconstruction team that works every Saturday

    • Check your email to sign up each week

  • Fundraising

    • Shack-a-thon

      • Build Shacks to raise money for Habitat in the Brickyard

      • You can stay in the Habitat shack, help build it, and/or help collect money all week by panhandling in the brickyard

    • 5k race

    • Various other fundraisers to come

  • Education

    • Tutoring program

    • Awareness events

    • Helps educate the families of Habitat homeowners to help eliminate poverty

  • Tutoring

    • Beginning of the year picnic coming soon

    • Tutoring is every Tuesday and Thursday from 6 to 8 pm

    • Meet in the Bragaw Circle lot

• Break Trips

  • Build homes in other parts of the country

  • Fall break coming soon

    • Location: TBA

    • Leave Wednesday; work Thursday, Friday and Saturday; then come back on Sunday

• Shack-a-thon

  • September 23^rd until September 28^th

  • Spend the night in the shack

  • Help out with food and entertainment

• Vice President - Molly Widmyer

  • Purchase T-shirts from Molly for $10

  • Sign up to play intramural sports - flag football starting soon!

  • More sports will be coming up as well (be on the lookout for an email)

  • Last year was the first year for Habitat IM sports

    • Women's dodgeball is the defending League Champ

    • Football and Softball are going for most improved this year

    • WE NEED YOU TO MAKE HABITAT THE BEST LIKE WE SHOULD BE!

• Fundraising - Brittany Parish, Rachel Hughes, Tiffany Ortega

  • Raise funds to support Habitat for Humanity

  • Coordinate everything that goes into the 5k in the Spring

  • If you have any ideas or know any businesses that would like to donate contact one of the officers

  • Co-chairs are desired

• Education and Outreach - Tim Stewart and Stephanie Ngan

  • Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Wake County Boys and Girls Club

  • Meet in the Bragaw Circle lot at 6 pm to carpool

  • Check your email for more information

  • Tutoring is a lot of fun

  • You will be tutoring kids from elementary school all the way to high school

  • There are basic subjects so the material should not be too difficult

  • Tutoring begins September 18^th

  • Also Tutoring at Habitat of Wake County

  • Transportation is provided to all tutoring (carpooling)

• Treasurer - Ashley Cowan

  • In charge of all the funds and accountability of where the money is spent/donated

  • Knows for a fact that NCSU Habitat is a non-profit

• Fellowship - Kristen Hoke, Alyssa Moore

  • Get food to the worksites on workdays

  • Plans fun activities

    • Tailgating

    • Hurricanes game

    • Bonfire

    • Dancing

    • Any other ideas would be appreciated

  • Plans events for Shack-A-Thon as well (Thursday night will be a comedy show)

• Publicity - David Rochette, Chris Dulin

  • Get the word out via press releases, chalking, painted, fliers, etc.

  • Painting tunnel the night(morning) before Shack-a-Thon

  • The more people helping the better

• Secretary - Taylor Massey

  • Takes minutes and distributes them to the rest of the club

  • Manages the list serve

  • Assists in the development of the Agenda

• Works Projects - David Hoffman, Andy Binder, Jon Weaver

  • 2 crews each week - 1 construction, 1 deconstruction

  • About 20 people on each crew

  • They do most of Shack-a-Thon (collecting wood, preparing, building the shack, assisting others with their shacks, whack-a-shack, etc.)

  • Need a lot of supplies for Shack-a-Thon if you know of anyone who will donate some. (Need a lot of nails and wood)

  • Sign up for co-chairs to become more involved during the workdays as well

• Webmaster - Joe France

  • Manages website

  • Assists in the creation of the Agenda/Newsletter

  • Will be creating a RSS feed (shows recent updates so you can know what is going on in Habitat)

• President - Lisa Thompson

  • Runs the club

  • Helps out wherever possible

  • (she is single) (Point emphasized several times)

CO-CHAIRS ARE WANTED FOR TUTORING, FELLOWSHIP, FUNDRAISING, AND WORKS PROJECTS

Construction Game

Build the tallest tower possible using only newspaper and masking tape

• Broke into groups of 5 to 10 people

• Most groups took the same approach of rolling the paper then taping into a tube. The tubes were then stacked to create a tall pole like tower.

• After several minutes, time was called. People were still frantically taping

• Many of the towers were supported by the ceiling, or they were just taped straight to the ceiling so that they would not fall over. Several fell over as soon as everyone let go of it.

• The winning group was only about a millimeter from the ceiling; however, a tie was called because another group was only about an inch away from the ceiling.

Apparel

• We want to make a Shack-a-thon T-shirt

• Design ideas are needed (actually draw what the t-shirt should look like don't just say it should have a house on it or whatever)
