The works projects officers are probably who most people think about when they hear Habitat for Humanity. The works project officers are those people who coordinate and lead the work days every weekend.
All the time and energy we spend fundraising each semester goes to support a home in Wake County. In addition to providing financial support for the home, we also provide the bulk of the labor for our house. It is up to the works project officers to communicate with Wake County Habitat for Humanity and ensure that we have a house to work on.
Once the works project officers have done that, they get a group of about 30 to 40 volunteers via the Listserve to come out nearly every Saturday morning. These volunteers then either go to a construction site or a deconstruction site. With construction, the volunteers help build an entire house, from foundation to roofing to painting, in a little more than a semester's time. With deconstruction, volunteers help tear down old homes and buildings, while at the same time salvaging as much of the materials as possible to be taken and re-sold at the Habitat for Humanity Re-store in Raleigh.
It is up to the works project officers to ensure that we have work sites to work on and a steady stream of volunteers to participate each weekend. Additionally, works project officers have been heavily engaged in the planning and running of Shack-A-Thon.
