The name of the organization is derived from the initial letters of the three Greek words for education, life, and friendship. It signifies that education and friendship constitute the basis of a full and happy life. The motto of Gamma Beta Phi is Progressus per Erditioneum (Progress Through Education), and its watchwords are Scholarship, Service, and Character.

Conditions of Membership
Dues: The yearly chapter dues are $20. This is to be paid to the treasurer at the beginning of the spring semester. Seniors who expect to graduate that spring pay $10 for that semester only. Points System: Members are required to accumulate 5 points per semester. One of these can be fulfilled with a passive project that only involves donating items such as toys, canned food, or can tabs. The rest of the points can be fulfilled with meeting attendance and service points through participation in a service project. First-semester members: During the first semester in Gamma Beta Phi, new members are required to do an additional new member service project. This project is an opportunity for new members to get to know each other better. Members are dropped from the organization if they do not pay the required dues or meet their point requirement. Members who do not meet their point requirement in one semester will be placed on probation status; they must earn their regular point requirement, plus 2 additional points, for the following semester to return to good standing.
