What Hope for the Homeless Does:

  • Downtown Runs: Every night of the week except Friday and Saturday, there is a team that leaves from NC State and drives downtown to deliver food and items to the homeless around downtown Raleigh. A night leader is needed for each run to coordinate driving and volunteers. The leader sets a time to head out, but usually the team leaves around 10 PM. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Sarah Beth. We especially need guys!

  • PALS Tutoring: PALS tutoring helps homeless children in transitional housing developments after school. There are both academic and character development components to the after school program. The PALS coordinator works with a volunteer from Pan Lutheran Ministeries, the organization which runs the transitional housing, to plan and oversee the program. Tutoring is on Monday and Wednesday afternoons, starting at 5:30. Ideally, every volunteer will be paired with a child for the semester and work with that same child every week. The coordinator and PLM may also plan additional activities for the kids on weekends. Contact Jeff if you want to tutor

  • Food, Blanket, and Clothing Drives: These are conducted periodically throughout the year. Members of Hope for the Homeless will be on the club e-mail list, which will contain updates about drives to help with and related volunteer opportunities.

  • Activities to promote Homeless Awareness: We hand out information sheets during Hunger and Homelessness Awareness week. The club is also willing to sponsor or partly sponsor members to attend a national conference on Homelessness in the fall. We also show the video Taylor's Campaign each year. We will also be having speakers talk about issues related to homelessness and notify members of events in the community related to homelessness that they can become involved in.

Other Ways to Get Involved!

  • Salvation Army Tutoring: Like PALS, Salvation Army involves helping out some great kids. Salvation Army Tutoring is done on a less personal basis since the kids may change and volunteers generally help out any kids rather than mentoring a specific child. Tutoring is in the evenings a few days a week around 8 PM. Contact the shelter for details.

  • Food Salvage: Food Salvage is a program which facilitates the distribution of unused food from Fountain Dining Hall to the Raleigh Rescue Mission on a nightly basis. The run takes from 1 to 1 1/2 hours starting at approximately 8 PM. This is no longer directly associated with Hope but still a great way to volunteer!! If you are interested, e-mail Daniel Cheek at dwcheek@ncsu.edu.

  • Also, look through the links off our website. Some other organizations in the Raleigh area need volunteers, such as The Healing Place. There are lots of ways to get involved if you don't see anything in this list that fits what you're looking for!
