Carbon markets and the role of forestry

Scott Settelmyer

Forestry activities can make a significant contribution to mitigating climate change by (i) removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it in the biomass of trees and soils, (ii) reducing carbon dioxide emissions from deforestation, and (iii) producing renewable biomass fuels that can replace carbon-intensive, fossil fuels. Despite its significant potential, forestry has played only a small role within the emerging international carbon markets, but promises to grow in importance.

This presentation will provide an overview of the carbon markets and discuss the role of forestry activities within existing and future markets.
