NEW (7 July): A podcast of the presentations is available.
14 May: From donations of the symposium attendees, and a matching contribution from our ISTF Chapter, we were able to contribute $20 to Carbonfund.org towards offseting emissions generated by the symposium. The amount of carbon generated was estimated to be 1.1 tons, and $20 will offset approximately 3.6 tons. Good work!
30 April: Copies of the presentations from the symposium are available at the PRESENTERS page.
Attendance at this symposium will count as four (4) Category 1 Continuing Forestry Education (CFE) credits from the Society of American Foresters (SAF).
Voluntary carbon offsets are a promising, but controversial mechanism for reducing net carbon dioxide emissions worldwide. Vendors and brokers of carbon offsets offer a variety of ways for sequestering carbon or reducing emissions, including reforestation or avoiding deforestation in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions, including the US. Their proponents believe that responsible consumers and corporations with good information working in a free market can make an impact on a global problem. The International Society of Tropical Foresters Student Chapter at NC State University is organizing a symposium to gather leaders and researchers in this field to describe the ways in which offsets are implemented, including reforestation; how to overcome the barriers of verfication and additionality; and how carbon offsets are traded on the market; as well as the policy implications of voluntary carbon offsets.
We invite you to join us on Friday, April 25th in Raleigh, NC on the campus of North Carolina State University in Jordan Hall, Room 1216 to hear presentations from Carol Jordan, Ray Aycock, John Rogers, Scott Settelmyer, Eric Carlson, Brian Murray, and Christopher Galik and be invlolved in discussions concerning this important topic. The symposium will be 3/4ths of a day, beginning at 8:30 AM, including a free catered lunch, and dismissing at 3:30 pm with a reception. Please follow the links above for additional information.
