The Philosophy Club at NC State University is currently undergoing a redirection and
rejuvenation aimed at promoting an intellectual culture in our department, our university,
and our community, by means of research and intelligent discussion. A philosopher's
perspective on the world is not a static body of knowledge and beliefs to be handed down from
teacher to student or parent to child. Instead, it is a way of thinking about things, a method of
learning as much as possible about a problem, including existing theories or positions on
that problem, then forumulating one's own position based on a rigorously rational reflection
on the best possible answer.
In many current issues, we perceive a marked lack of this rational process. Often times,
ill-contemplated received views are posited as if they were complete, sound arguments. Discussions
about contemporary social, political and economic problems will commonly consist of little
more than two parties stating their own baseless beliefs about an issue. When this kind of
rationally-devoid argumentation occurs in a private conversation, it is unfortunate.
When it occurs in matters of state, it can be devastating. In whatever small way possible, we
wish to offer a solution to this pervasive problem.
To that end, the Philosophy Club orients itself toward fostering a more intelligent discussion on
issues that face all members of our society. Our meetings, activities, special events
and research initiatives all focus on bringing the benefits of a philosophical way of thinking
out to the community at large. We encourage participation by students, faculty and community
members. All Club functions, unless otherwise noted, are open to the public. Finally, we
encourage everyone to share their thoughts with us about how to better achieve our goals.
Please see our Contact Info page if you have any thoughts!
