What is PVMA?

The Pre-Veterinary Medical Association of North Carolina State University caters to students interested in the profession of veterinary medicine. Students are able to attend presentations about the diverse multitude of careers in veterinary medicine, meet fellow students, participate in service projects and social events, and choose to participate in opportunities which will help them gain experience and networking contacts that can be quite beneficial. The club also allows students to explore multiple paths within the veterinary field, providing opportunities for interaction with students of similar aspirations through scholarship, leadership, and fellowship.

Meeting Information

Every other week the PVMA holds meetings that contain programs with different speakers. Presenters discuss the dynamic and diverse nature of the veterinary career. Members are encouraged to explore the many possible paths that can be taken in the veterinary field. Speakers in the past have included veterinarians in the following practices: small animal, avian and exotic, emergency care, large animal, and specialty (orthopedic surgery, ophthalmology, etc). Speakers have also come from the admissions committee at the NC State Veterinary School and from organizations including the Wake County SPCA and the US Equine Rescue League.

Such events include: collecting goods for Save Haven for Cats, volunteering at Habitat for Humanity, volunteering at Carnivor Preservation Trust, collecting cans for local food banks, collecting toys for the Toys for Tots program, and volunteering at the North Carolina Zoo. The service committee works closely with the Service Chair Officer in planning events for the club to participate in, and requires strong group work skills, and will help improve leadership skills.
  • Fundraising Committee
  • Various fundraisers include the E. Coli project at the N.C. State Fair, dead week doughnuts, bake-sales, dog washes, cookbooks, and others. Funds are partially donated to non-profit organizations such as the SPCA, US Equine Rescue, and Carnivore Preservation Trust, as well as club maintenance and end of semester reward benefits for active members.
  • Correspondence Committee
  • Corresspondence chairs are responsible for providing publicity for when activities occur which includes decorating and setting out boards around campus, as well as chalking the brickyard before every metting. Committee members will help the two chairs chalk and hang fliers each Sunday night at 7:00pm before a meeting, at the stairs of D.H. Hill Library.
