Welcome to the PURINA College Feeding Program at the NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine!

The Nestlé-PURINA Veterinary College Program is an opportunity for members of the CVM community (current students, faculty, staff, and clinicians) to purchase Purina ProPlan dog and cat food, canine and feline Purina Veterinary Diets, Purina dog treats, Fortiflora (a powdered probiotic supplement), etc., at a greatly reduced cost.

The food is generously provided free to the school by Nestlé-PURINA then sold to raise money for the students. A large portion of the earnings from the food will go to SCAVMA to fund things like student travel to meetings and externships. The rest will be retained for use in Purina-sponsored CVM events, such as Dog Olympics, the White Coat Ceremony, Dog Day Race, donations to SCAVMA auctions, exam breakfasts, etc.

Please peruse the FAQs below for more information about the program. If you have any questions, feel free to stop us in the hall or email us. Also be sure to check out the Nestlé-PURINA bulletin board by the Histology lab for updates. Let us know if there is anything Nestlé-PURINA or we can do for you!

Best wishes,

Nestlé-Purina College Feeding Program FAQ’s

Q. Am I eligible to purchase food through the Purina College Feeding Program?

A. You are eligible to purchase food if you are one of the following members of the CVM community: current student (DVM or graduate student), house officer (intern, resident), faculty or clinician, or staff of the CVM. Family members or friends of CVM community members, Retired employees, former students, etc. are not eligible.

Q. How do I get started in the program?

A. Simple! All you need to do to get started is to register your pets right on the electronic order form at the same time you place your order by supplying their name, species, weight, and breed. You only need to register your pets once per year. Once every year, please register your pets, even if you have ordered before.

Q. What foods are available for purchase?

A. Purina ProPlan pet food (dog and cat) and Purina Veterinary Diets (dog and cat). Additionally, you may purchase dog biscuits, Dental Chews for dogs, and Fortiflora, a probiotic supplement (dog and cat). Please visit www.purina.com for ProPlan diets, or www.purinaveterinarydiets.com for Purina Veterinary Diets. We can purchase most diets available and in most sizes. Please feel free to ask us any questions about diets also.

Q. Do I need a prescription for Purina Veterinary Diets?

A. A prescription must be turned in for Purina Veterinary Diets; the prescription will be valid for one year and can be written by any licensed veterinarian. Purina Veterinary diets are 2-3 letters (e.g. DCO, DM, JM, NF, etc). You do not need a prescription to order Purina ProPlan diets, Dental Chews, dog treats or Fortiflora.

Q. How do I submit a prescription for a Purina Veterinary Diet?

A. Simply place the prescription in the Purina mailbox (the red mailboxes outside South Theater), or scan it and email it to cjwillso@ncsu.edu (in 2009) or imdelval@ncsu.edu (beginning in 2010). We do not need it in order for you to place your order but do need it by the time you pick up the food.

Q. When and how can I place an order?

A. Once a month in months that school is in session (i.e., not in December and summer months), we will send out an email on the CVM listserves with a weblink to a Google form where you can order food and register your pets if you have not already done so for the school year. As a rough guide, orders are generally due by Friday afternoon of the first or second week of the month. Distributions are generally two weeks later on a Monday afternoon, but this may vary depending on fall break, exam schedules, etc. Orders are placed once per month only during the weeklong window in which the weblink is active. We are unable to accept or place orders at other times.

Q. When, where, and how do I pick up my order?

A.  Once a month we will hold a distribution, in general (though this can vary) for 1 to 1.5 hours on Monday afternoon, two weeks after the orders are due. The distribution date and time is sent out in the email requesting orders and again as a reminder just before the distribution. The Purina food room is located out by TAU on the side of the second barn facing the cafeteria. Please drive to the barn to facilitate picking up your food. Feel free to send a friend or co-worker to pick up your order – they just need to supply your name and pay for you.

Q. I missed the monthly distribution, or the distribution time is not convenient for me. Can I pick up my order outside of the distribution time?

A. While we understand that schedules are different, things come up, or people forget, we regret that we are unable to meet individuals outside of the monthly distribution for food pick-up. At most veterinary schools, only veterinary students are able to participate in such a program, so please understand that with over 100 orders/month and our class schedules and school commitments, we cannot accommodate any further distributions. If you are unable to pick up your order, please send a co-worker or friend to pick up your order for you or place a new order the following month. Orders not picked up will be recirculated and will not be held for the following month due to space constraints.

Q. I missed the monthly distribution. Will you save my food so that I may pick it up next month?

A. Due to space constraints and increasing numbers of orders, orders not picked up will be recirculated and will not be held for the following month. Please place a new order the next month if you forget to pick up your order. Due to the large number of orders we process in the Purina Feeding Program, we request that if you are unable to pick up your order that you please send a co-worker or friend to pick up your order for you.

Q. How can I pay for food?

A. Exact cash or check made out to “SCAVMA-Purina” at the time of pick-up.

Q. How much can I order? Can I order food for family and friends?

A. Currently, you may order up to 10 items per month. One bag, case of cans, or box of biscuits, etc, qualifies as one item each. While we hope that your friends and family also feed their pets Purina products, the College Feeding Program is available only for pets owned by members of the CVM community. Please help us to continue this incredible “perk” by only ordering for your personal pets. Violators will become ineligible to purchase any products through the Purina feeding program.

Q. Is the Purina College Feeding Program held year-round?

A. The student reps run the Purina Feeding Program, so it is held in the months when school is in session.
