Chapter membership in the NC State student chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is open to NC State students (undergraduate and graduate) who are preparing for careers in or related to the field of human resource management.  You do not have to be concentrating in HR to join SHRM!  The NC State student chapter has been recognized consistently for over a decade as an award-winning chapter at both the state and national levels for its contribution to the professional development of its student members, and many of our student members have received national recognitions and honors.  Active involvement in chapter activities brings students high visibility in the professional community as well as countless opportunities for professional development.  All students – regardless of academic concentration – can benefit from affiliation with this outstanding student organization.

Membership presents many opportunities for students including speakers and workshops on timely business topics, site visits to local organizations, networking with professional HR managers, job-search workshops and forums, access to a professional mentor, preparation for professional certification (PHR), and practical experience in contributing to a professional organization.  Student members also receive discounted registration to local, state, and national professional meetings and conferences; numerous scholarship opportunities are available as well.  Active participation in the NCSU|SHRM chapter encourages students to develop decision-making, leadership, teamwork, and communication skills, and exposes students to the “professionalism” expected in the business community.

The NC State student chapter is affiliated with the Raleigh-Wake Human Resource Management Association (RWHRMA), the local professional SHRM chapter (www.rwhrma.org).  Our student members are invited to attend RWHRMA’s monthly professional luncheon meetings that feature relevant and interesting speakers and programs.  (Local student chapters are responsible for working registration at the monthly meetings and planning one of the meetings each year, which is a great opportunity to make professional contacts and gain some valuable experience!)

We have established a mentor program with RWHRMA, in which interested student members are paired with professional HR managers to get some “hands-on” knowledge about careers in HRM.  We schedule several “site visits” to local businesses, and maintain a database of part-time, internship, and full-time positions to which student members have access.  Student members are also invited to include their resumes in the semi-annual resume books compiled by our chapter and distributed to area hiring managers.  In addition, RWHRMA provides an annual scholarship for a SHRM student member, as does the SHRM State Council.  Student members also receive a discount in converting their student membership to professional SHRM membership upon graduation.
