Mission Statement

To pursue progressive actions that educate the N.C.State campus and community about the science and ethics behind and animal rights issues through interactive events such as lectures, films, and social gatherings.


Accomplishments

2007

  • Distributed information on veggie living on Meatout Day
  • Held theatre showing of "Earthlings"
  • Held theatre showing of "Peaceable Kingdom"
  • Hosted Debrah Durham, primatologist, with her lecture on the impacts of animal testing on primates
  • Began monthly vegan potlucks
  • Raised awareness during Ag Week on modern factory farm practices
  • Changed Mission focus to purely animal rights

2006

  • Hosted authors Lee Hall and Priscilla Feral of Friends of Animals as they presented their new books, "Capers in the Churchyard: Animal Rights Advocacy in the age of Terror" and "Dining With Friends: The Art of North American Vegan Cuisine"
  • Held theatre showing of "Earthlings"
  • Hosted primatologist Debrah Durham as a speaker
  • Incorporated as a non-profit
  • Hosted Robert Reder, new NC-HSUS Director
  • Hosted Harold Brown in cooperation with Duke SPA, TVS, and CAAT
  • Held a theatre showing of "Mad Cowboy" to a crowd of 200+ students

2005

  • Held "SPARC Animal Advocacy Week on the Brickyard
  • Hosted "Meat Market" lecture by Erik Marcus
  • "Through Other Eyes" film festival hosted on campus in coordination with CAAT
  • Hosted PETA's "Animal Liberation" display
  • SPARC member awarded 2005 Proggy Award for animal activism

2004

  • Hosted former cattle rancher Howard Lyman, who discussed the dangers of meat consumption, particularly regarding the increasing of Mad Cow Disease. Follow-up article published in Technician.
  • Hosted “Human Harms of Animal Research” lecture by Dr. Ray Greek. Follow-up “Focused” feature in Technician.
  • Hosted a lecture on the Atkins Diet by nutritionist Amy Lanou followed by a free vegan Thanksgiving dinner open to the community.
  • Began participating in bimonthly club service events to benefit abandoned potbellied pigs at Pig Pals; open to the entire campus community.
  • Began annual participation in Earth Day on the Brickyard

2003

  • Hosted physician Michael Greger who discussed the benefits of vegan nutrition. Follow-up article published in Technician.
  • Participated in an Animal Rights debate and introduction to SPARC on WKNC 88.1 campus radio.
  • Hosted nutritionist Dilip Barman who discusses vegetarianism and its benefits for human health, the environment, and animals.
  • Began hosting an average of three vegan dinners per semester open to the entire campus community.
