North Carolina State University's Rho Phi Lambda Website Read on below to find out more about Rho Phi Lambda's History Symbol Requirements Goals The History In the fall semester of the 1958-59 school year, Professor Thomas I. Hines,Head of the Department of Recreation andParks Administration, of the Schoolof Education, at N.C.State College, selected the 11 seniors in the curriculum with the highest scholastic standing toserveas a committee to formulateand design a professional, honorary fraternityfor outstanding seniors, and to become the charter members of the fraternity. Thus Rho Phi Alpha was born. By the early 1980's five additional chapters had been formed. Parallelling the development of Rho Phi Alpha was another professional recreation honorary fraternity, Sigma Lambda Sigma, begun at Florida State University.In 1980 they had 11 chapters. In 1982, primarily through the leadership ofDr. Frances Cannon at Flordia State and Dr. Roger Warren at NCSU, merger talksbegan. During the spring semester, 1985, the individual Rho Phi Alpha and SigmaLambda Sigma chapters voted to merge into a new honorary, Rho Phi Lambda.The merger was consummated with the first meeting of Rho Phi Lambda in October1985 in Dallas, Texas with 18 charter chapters. The chapter atNCSU beingthe oldest was named the Alpha Chapter. Additional chapters havebeen added,and in 1996 there were 27 chapters scattered throughout the UnitedStates,more have been initiated since then... The Symbol: The emblem of Rho Phi Lambda consists of these parts: an 18link chain, a triangle, and two olive branches. The 18 link chain representsthe 18 charter chapters (the original 12 Sigma Lambda Sigma and 6 Rho PhiAlpha chapters).The triangle represents scholarship, leadership, and service.The olive branch half circling the letters represents honor and success. Rhorepresents Recreation, Phi represents Park, and Lambda represents Leisure. The Requirements: The requirements to be a member of Rho Phi Lambda are as follows: The student must have completed 9 credit hours in PRT, and have at leasta3.2 GPA in the department, and a 3.0 overall GPA. Our Goals (the wordsof Former President Andrew Powers, and Faculty Advisor Annette Moore) : As a club, Rho Phi Lambda strives to provide opportunities for personal and professional enrichment of its members. Active Rho members often receive financial support to attend professional conferences and meetings. We are always looking for avenues to better equip Rho members for the profession, and we have a lot of fun doing it! |
