In the spring of 2003, the student body of UNC-Chapell Hill approved a $4 increase in student fees, with all proceeds going toward renewable energy projects on campus. The first project funded by this voluntary fee, a solar hot water heating system for Morrison Dormitory, is already underway!

In order to encourage students to purchase Green Power (that is, electricity produced from renewable sources such as solar and wind), Duke University has agreed to match student green power purchases dollar for dollar, up to $25,000!

After UNC's initiative, ASU followed suit with a student referednum of their own, with a whopping 84% of students supporting the measure. As of this September, a solar heating system for a gymnasium pool and a program to begin fueling the campus buses with biodiesel are vying to become the first funded projects.

Students at UT-Knoxville voted this past spring to use money from student fees to purchase green power at their university. This student-led leap forward could make UT-K the biggest purchaser of green energy from the Tennessee Valley Authority's "Green Power Switch" program, currently the largest renewable energy program in the southeastern United States.

Over the next three academic years, Sewanee University will increase the percentage of its energy purchased from sustainable sources from none to 5%, 10%, and finally 15% by the spring of 2007.
