Article I Name & Purpose
Section I: Name
The name of this organization shall be the "Young Scientist Program" hereafter referred to as "YSP" in the Constitution and By-Laws.
Section II: Purpose
The YSP help bridge the gap between North Carolina State University and nearby, specifically Fred Olds, Centennial Middle School, and more schools if the resources are available. We wish to educate and enlighten young students with a broad spectrum of sciences by participating in one or more of the following:
Tutoring- Volunteers will not only become mentors, but also will enlighten students to the options and opportunities available to them in the science field as well as helping them understand the process of discovery and to grow with an appreciation of science. The club shall serve as recruitment and support for the volunteers and their tutees.
Demonstrations- Members of the YSP will perform demonstrations for the students based on the various science disciplines covered within the their curriculums. At least one demonstration will be performed per grade level (K-8) per semester.
Science Club/Science Olympiad- The members of the YSP will work to found and farther develop the science club at Centennial Middle School. The science club will perform science experiments and activities to educate the students farther within their science curriculums. The Science Olympiad will be established as part of the Science Club. The YSP Science Olympiad volunteers will mentor and tutor in the preparation of this annual regional event held each February.
Article II Membership
Section I: Membership
Membership shall be open to all regularly enrolled students and faculty at NC State, as well as high school students who intend to matriculate into NCSU. These members will have an interest at heart in science and helping children.
Members will participate in at least one of the aforementioned activities listed in Article I Section II twice per semester, attend at least half of all general meetings.
Section II: Voting
All members will receive to right to vote in elections pending they meet the membership requirements stated in Article II Section I.
Article III Officers
Section I: Positions
The elective officers for this club shall be the President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Historian/Secretary, Website Designer, and Activities Coordinator.
Section II: Length of Term
The officers shall be elected by the club members to serve a term of one semester. An individual will serve no more then two terms per position.
Section III: Duties
President- Will oversee the function of all Centennial Middle School programs including the Science Olympiad, Science club, and one-on-one tutoring, will appoint members to head committees overseeing the functioning of the Science Olympiad and Science Club, will ensure scheduling of meetings each semester and preside over all meetings, will oversee all other programs of the YSP and will maintain constant contact with vice presidents, treasurer, will maintain consistent relations with organization advisor, and appointed committee heads to ensure duties are being preformed as stated in the constitution.
Vice Presidents:
VP of One-on-One Tutoring- Will organize the assignment of tutors to tutees for one-on-one tutoring, will act as a liaison between the students and Fred Olds for organization of the one-on-one tutoring of elementary students, will orientate students with Fred Olds Elementary school and faculty, keep students informed of school cancellations and holidays, will deal with all matters pertaining to the organization and functioning of the one-on-one tutoring program, will maintain the YSP list-serve, will begin to perform all duties in a timely fashion (within 1st month of each semester) as to ensure success of the tutoring program, will preside over meetings in absence of president, and will serve to ensure room reservations and assignments for officer and general meetings.
VP of Demonstrations- Will organize the assignment of demonstrations to performed within each quarter of the Olds Elementary school year, will act as a liaison between Fred Olds for setup (time and date) and organization of demonstrations, will deal with all matters pertaining to the organization and function of the YSP demonstrations program, will begin duties pertaining to demonstrations in a timely fashion (within 1st month of each semester) to ensure completing of quarterly demonstrations, preserve and record demonstration ideas for future use, will preside over meetings in absence of president, and will send reminders via e-mail to YSP regarding meeting times and other miscellaneous announcements.
Treasurer- Will oversee all financial aspects of the YSP including the attainment of funding through the University, will oversee and organize all fund raising activities, will keep track of the YSP’s finances and be able to report the financial status at each officer meeting, will represent the YSP at University institutions pertaining to funding or will ensure that the organization is adequately represented, and will assess logistics of the purchase of items including food, demonstration supplies, and other miscellaneous items.
Historian/Secretary- Record minutes of both officer meetings and general body meetings, maintain point system to keep track of member activity, and maintain a database of all members, which includes contact information and volunteer hours.
Website Designer- Will serve to maintain YSP website functionality, receive and post updates on the website, and continually improve the design, performance, and usability of the YSP website.
Activities/Publicity Coordinator- Will work to publicize the YSP as a viable organization, publicize events and meeting to the general participating body of YSP members, will lead the arrangement of social activities, and will coordinate and lead the obtainment of any food and beverages at YSP functions.
Section IV: Vacancies
If any elected officer is unable to serve or is voted by the serving officers of the YSP, with a two-thirds vote, to be inadequately fulfilling his/her duties as an officer, a meeting will be called to elect a new officer to replace him/her, unless the vacated office is that of president. If the office of the president is vacated, one of the vice-presidents shall assume that office and a new vice-president shall be elected.
Article IV Dues
Section I: Dues
There will be potential dues to meet financial needs the possibility of fundraising, dues, and petitioning of the student senate/Ag Council/E-council. The officers must vote on having dues with a majority rule.
Article V Amending the Constitution and by-laws.
Section I: Amending
Amendments to the constitution or by-laws shall be presented by members of the club in writing and read at an officers meeting and shall be voted at that same meeting. At least 3/4th of all officers shall be present for the vote and decisions will based on majority rule.
Article VI Meetings
Section I: Meetings
Meetings for the semester will be scheduled by the officers within the first month of each semester. The general body of the YSP shall meet monthly while the officers shall meet every two weeks.
Article VII Advisors
Section I: Requirements
The YSP will have one or more advisors at all times. These advisors will come from a variety of departments within the science and education fields. No two advisors will come from the same department.
Section II: Duties
Advisors will attend all officer meetings as well as specified general meetings and serve to assist with fundraising and the general organization of the YSP.

The club shall make provision for any standing committees needed and/or for forming any special committees when needed.

There shall be a Point system which will be discussed by the officers.
